Goma Volcano Observatory

Created in 1986, the Goma Volcano Observatory (GVO), or “Observatoire Volcanologique de Goma” (OVG) in French, is the Congolese scientific institute in charge of the monitoring of Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira volcanoes, in the Virunga Volcanic Province, and the study of impacts related to the eruptive activity.

GVO is also responsible for providing information on volcanoes and their activity to the local authorities and population.

In addition to the administration department, the GVO is divided into 5 units corresponding to specific disciplines:

  • Physical Volcanology Unit
  • Seismology Unit
  • Ground Deformation Unit
  • Technical and Electronics Unit
  • Communication and Education Unit
